Strategy Guides
Strategy guides for language learning
These guides have been developed for people who are learning a language independently. Each guide highlights a helpful strategy for organising, managing or evaluating a personal language learning programme. Topics include: deciding which words to learn, knowing how to produce difficult sounds, and learning how to measure progress.
Diagnostic Tools
Diagnostic language tools
Cotterall Consulting also employs a range of diagnostic tools when working
with advanced learners of English. These tools include the following tests.
Pronunciation test
This test identifies key sounds which interfere with clients’ ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. Test results are analysed and used in designing instruction and feedback on target sounds, and in developing a detailed
practice schedule.
Vocabulary test
This test assesses clients’ readiness for employment, everyday communication,
and/or tertiary study. Test results identify the words clients need to master (receptively and productively) in order to be able to communicate effectively
in the target situation.
